Welcome to my brand new website! I hope you love it as much as I do!
If you are on this page, I am assuming that you have already seen some samples of my work, especially my day in the life sessions, which are my favourites. If not, make sure you go check them out.
As promised, I am here today to tell you more about myself, my story and my ‘why’.
(Even if it’s not very natural for me to open up like this, especially through a blog).
Some of you already know that photography has been my passion for about 14 years now. I have done it all: weddings, family portraits, commercial, studio, etc. Funnily enough, I never really found myself in most of the work. It was beautiful work, but it wasn’t me. Don’t get me wrong, I loved all of it (well, all except the studio work – I really didn’t enjoy that), but I never really found my voice in any of it.
I finally found my voice after a series of what seemed like unfortunate events that ended up being blessings in disguise.
There were many of these, but the BIG THREE were:
- Having a full burn-out working as a photographer in Romania (for months I could not even stomach the idea of picking up a camera), leading in part to us relocating to the UK.
- My fourth child ending up in an induced coma at the age of only 2 months.
- Me being diagnosed with a pretty annoying autoimmune disorder.
These challenges slowly worked together to help me to find some balance in my life, to rediscover the joy in picking up my camera and to finally find my ‘why’.
It was a tough journey, full of tears, doubts, frustrations, and moments of wanting to give it all up and do something completely different with my life. In the end, though, it was a journey towards peace and happiness as I finally realized just what it is that I love about photography.
I love people.
And I love their stories.
I’ve discovered that the only thing that attracts me to photography is the ability to tell people’s honest, true-to-life stories through imagery. No more pretending, no more staging, no more fakeness.
We all have our own unique stories and none of them are the perfect, happy, flawless ones that we are constantly bombarded with in the media. It’s nice to blame others for this crazy idea of perfection that we are surrounded by, but I think we all play a role in it, at least I know I do. It’s time for us all to get real and to celebrate what we have while we have it (and not what we might want others to think we have).
Life is never perfect, but it’s beautiful.
Life is not happy all the time, but it’s full of emotions and moments that you will want to hold on to for generations to come.
Looking through my own personal photographs, I was shocked by how few authentic photos there were of my family (and almost none of me with the rest of my family). As a photographer, I insisted on creating staged portraits of them (which are beautiful by the way!), but I never documented our life the way it was. So now I have a collection of beautiful faces, but I don’t have a collection of memories.
What was the face my 16-year-old made when we fed her spinach as a toddler? How proudly did she smile as a 5-year-old dressing her little brother as a princess? What was that face they made at their daddy when he couldn’t finish reading The House at Pooh Corner without crying? How many moments have I already forgotten because I never thought to capture them? This is my biggest regret, as a photographer, as a wife and as a mother.
Life only happens once, so make sure you capture it, not only for yourself, but for your kids, too.
If you have read this far and you wonder if I found my voice, the answer is ‘yes’. I have found my voice in helping people to celebrate their lives, just the way they are: imperfect, but totally worth living. Because your real life is what you will want to remember.
The documentary approach to photography is the closest to my heart. The Day In The Life sessions are my favourite, if you have not seen them yet, please do. There are more to come, and more details about what a documentary approach to family and business photography means, so stay tuned and check out the next blog posts.
Now that you know more about my story, my why, myself, my life, my passion for stories and people, it’s time to celebrate this big event, as this new website has really come to light like a baby for me, so it does call for a celebration.
There is a huge surprise for you coming soon, are you ready?
Tomorrow you will find out all about it, I can’t wait to give you the great news and we’re only getting started!
But now just grab some popcorn and browse these pages, enjoy the stories behind the photographs and let me know your thoughts, your opinions and suggestions.
